Network reality

China’s major cities have fast, dense mobile networks.

213 Mbps

Ookla reported a national median mobile download speed of approximately 213 Mbps for China in September 2025 — an aggregate across all major Chinese operators.

Comfortable headroom for navigation, translation, video calls, uploads and streaming — including with the included VPN enabled.

  • National median mobile upload35 Mbps

Fast enough for photo backups, video messages and file uploads without waiting.

For most travellers, Chinese mobile networks are more than fast enough for navigation, translation, video calls, streaming, work tools and photo uploads — including when routed through the included VPN.

Speeds vary by device, location and live network conditions. Signal can weaken in remote regions such as western Sichuan, Tibet, Xinjiang and mountain areas, and inside long metro or high-speed rail tunnels.

More hassle after you land

Buying a local Chinese SIM at the airport means finding the right counter, presenting ID for local registration and comparing packages in an unfamiliar language after a long flight. A local SIM on its own also does not restore access to Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram and other services that are normally not reachable from mainland Chinese networks.

  • Find the right counter or mobile shop after landing
  • Present ID and complete local registration
  • A local SIM alone does not restore Google, Gmail or WhatsApp
  • Local-language or in-store top-ups may be needed later

Answers

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best eSIM for China?

eSIMbundle is the best choice for travellers who want reliable China mobile data with a VPN included at no extra cost, to help with privacy and access, although individual services may still be restricted. Buy before departure, install the eSIM, sign in to the eSIMbundle app, then connect after landing and enable the included VPN.

Which mobile network does eSIMbundle use in China?

In China, eSIMbundle connects to China Unicom. Your eSIM joins it automatically after landing, so you never need to choose a carrier. China Unicom supports 4G and 5G.

Does eSIMbundle have good coverage across China?

China has strong mobile coverage across Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi’an and other major cities, plus along the extensive high-speed rail network. Coverage is generally weaker in remote regions such as western Sichuan, Tibet, Xinjiang and some mountain and desert areas.

Is 5G available with a China eSIM, and how fast is it?

4G is available across populated China and 5G is widely available in central Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other major cities. Whether your phone connects on 4G or 5G depends on your device, location, available partner network and live network conditions. Speeds are comfortably suitable for navigation, translation, video calls, uploads and streaming.

How much data do I need for 7, 15 or 30 days in China?

Light users on Maps and messaging often manage on 1–3 GB a week. Normal travellers using navigation, translation, social media and video calls usually want 5–10 GB a week — especially with the VPN enabled. Heavy video or hotspot use can push past 20 GB a week. Use the Travel Data Calculator to estimate your usage.

Will Google, Gmail, WhatsApp and Instagram work in China?

Yes. These services are normally blocked on mainland Chinese networks, but the VPN included with every eSIMbundle China plan lets you use them. Install your eSIM, download the eSIMbundle app and sign in before departure. After connecting in China, turn on the VPN to use your familiar apps and websites.

Does eSIMbundle include a VPN for China?

Yes. Use VPN inside the eSIMbundle app with your normal account. VPN connection requires an active qualifying bundle, including on Wi-Fi. Prepare the app before departure; a bundle awaiting first use may not yet provide access. Choose a country and connect; use China & Russia mode in those destinations if needed. VPN does not guarantee access to every service.

Does a China eSIM include a Chinese phone number, calls or SMS?

eSIMbundle China plans are data plans. Use mobile data — with the included VPN — for WhatsApp, FaceTime and other internet-based calling and messaging apps. Keep your normal SIM active for standard calls, SMS and verification messages, subject to your home carrier’s roaming charges and support.

Can I keep my normal SIM, phone number and WhatsApp in China?

Yes. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, keep your normal SIM installed and use your eSIMbundle eSIM for mobile data. Your normal number stays connected to your home SIM, and WhatsApp continues using the number already registered to your account — reachable through the included VPN.

Can I add more data while I am in China?

Yes. In the eSIMbundle app, open Store or Add data and buy a separate bundle on the same installed profile. Each bundle has its own allowance and validity and may wait before first use. Eligible finite bundles offer saved-card auto top-up at 80% used, up to your approved package price. Manage it under Account → Auto top-up; check existing replacement orders before buying again.

Can I use the same eSIM in other countries after China?

Yes. The eSIMbundle eSIM stays installed on your phone. When you travel next, add a bundle for another supported destination and it activates on the same eSIM — no new installation required.

Should I buy my China eSIM before travelling?

Yes. Open the eSIMbundle app → Account → My eSIM → Set up your eSIM and use Install eSIM on this phone, or QR/manual fallback. Confirm the profile appears in phone settings. Installation does not start the bundle; first supported use in coverage does. At your destination, enable the line, select it for data and enable its Data Roaming setting. Keep the profile after the trip.
